About My Practice

I offer therapy in both English and Portuguese, as I'm originally from Brazil. I practice with a psychodynamic focus, with influence from contemporary approaches of psychoanalysis. This approach is especially appealing for people that might be naturally curious about what drives their choices, actions, and thoughts, or those who have tried cognitive behavioral therapy and didn't find it helpful.

With that said, I also have extensive training in cognitive behavioral and body-based therapies, and can implement those in our sessions as needed. Whether it is for building coping skills for a specific issue or for better dealing with issues that are getting in the way of daily living.

During my training, I have worked in multiple settings, including hospitals, specialized treatment in an inpatient unit, mindfulness based therapy and trauma-focused work in community mental health. Those experiences have given me the opportunity to work with a range of people from different backgrounds and identities, including immigrants, neurodivergent adults, the LGBTQIA+ community, bicultural and BIPOC individuals, etc.

I currently focus on working with individuals that are experiencing depression, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, suicidality, painful memories, forming and maintaining relationships, questions related to identity and belonging, trauma, and more. I am also continuously expanding my knowledge through training, classes, seminars, reading groups, peer consultation, individual and group supervisions, in order to continue up to date with developments in the field.

What's special about this approach?

In general terms, psychoanalysis and psychodynamic therapies consist in exploring the particularity of each person. There's not one solution for a certain issue or a general approach for a certain diagnosis, we focus on the unique traces of your experience. This approach identifies the experience of symptoms (some sort of suffering, what might have brought you to therapy in the first place) as a signal that something of the unconscious needs to be expressed. From that place we can start to develop possibilities of what might need to change for life to be perhaps more fulfilling.

Because of that, sessions are very collaborative, in the sense that through your speech, we start to develop the treatment. I offer a structure in order to explore what seems to become relevant throughout the sessions, such as elements of what you are saying that stand out, words and questions that I notice repeating, and sometimes I might offer interpretations that we can test and see if they fit/agree with what you are experiencing. It's a continuous process of creation, and therefore of trial and error, so I always welcome feedback and communication throughout the course of therapy.
